Jean Conklin, Saranac Lake High School Class of 1905, taken by William L. Distin. Adirondack Daily Enterprise, July 27, 2013. Born: February 10, 1887

Died: October 9, 1980

Jean H. Conklin was born in New York City. The family came to Saranac Lake for the health of her father, who died soon after. The family stayed on, operating a cure cottage on Main Street. Some time after graduation, Jean Conklin returned to the city and taught junior high school there. She may have timed her retirement in 1948, after 35 years of teaching, to return to Saranac Lake to care for her older sister Julia, who died the next year. Jean, described as a longtime resident of Saranac Lake, likely stayed on here in retirement until moving to Alice Hyde Nursing Home in Malone, where she died Oct. 9, 1980. She is buried in Pine Ridge Cemetery with her sister Julia and her mother, Jane Conklin.
