Mary Landon MacKenzie was the long-time historian for the Town of North Elba and the Village of Lake Placid. She was appointed 1964 and served for 37 years. Her "territory" included Ray Brook and extended into the North Elba portion of the Village of Saranac Lake. She wrote a definitive article tracing the route of the Northwest Bay/Old Military Road as it wended its way from Northwest Bay on Lake Champlain to Hopkinton, as well as many other letters and articles on subjects such as the Jacob Smith Moody family genealogy. Her works were gathered into a posthumous book--The Plains of Abraham: A History of North Elba and Lake Placid, cited on the Books and Other Resources page.
