Oley Speaks was a composer, songwriter and vocalist.  He wrote On the Road to Mandalay, using the words of Rudyard Kipling's poem "Mandalay". The song sold over a million copies.  He wrote more than 250 published songs.

Speaks is known to have stayed at the Lake Clear Inn the summers of 1913 and 1922.
