Peter Comstock came to Franklin Falls (then called McLenathan Falls) from Port Kent in 1848 to rebuilt the mills there, and by 1851 had built a hotel, store, school, and housing for his work force. All was destroyed in the after the disastrous fire of 1852, but he rebuilt and for 14 years a major lumbering operation under the direction of Christopher F. Norton of Plattsburgh was centered there.

With Robert Scott and William Nye, Comstock built the Wilmington notch road along the AuSable River to North Elba in 1854.
