Jean Keating and Robert Sullivan Crowned at Ball

The crowning of Miss Jean Keating as queen and Robert Sullivan as king at the Carnival ball in Hotel Saranac Saturday night climaxed the Winter Carnival which opened in Saranac Lake on Dec. 30 and concluded last night.

Selection of the monarchs was by popular vote and counting of the ballots was not completed by the committee until late Saturday afternoon. Miss Keating received 332 votes to lead her four rivals while Mr. Sullivan received 535 votes.

The ball attracted a crowd of 300 persons who danced to the music of Ernie LaRouche and his orchestra from 9 until after 1 o’clock. The ballroom was decorated in a winter-time theme. The crowning of the king and queen was the high light of the ball and the monarchs received their crowns from Noah Rondeau, famed hermit of Cold River. The hermit drew considerable attraction throughout the evening from the party-goers.

Alfredo Gonzalez, chairman for the social committee of the Saranac Lake Study and Craft Guild, was in charge of the ball arrangements. He was assisted by members of his committee.

Other events over Saturday and Sunday were the Northeastern Amateur Speed Skating championships which began Saturday afternoon and concluded yesterday. Large crowds of residents and visitors watched the events which attracted a large field of entrants from the state.

Last evening the finale of the Carnival took place with a costume skating party held at the municipal skating rink. The party was open to all children of the village and several hundred youngsters participated.

The Shamus club of Saranac Lake served refreshments to the youngsters at the party. Mrs. Charles Smith was chairman of the arrangements for the Parent-Teachers association.

The Carnival, termed a success, by the sports committee of the Chamber of Commerce, was the first held in this village in many years. Joseph Munn, committee chairman, directed all activities. The Carnival also included a large parade, a children’s sled derby, motion pictures, slalom racing, basketball and the previously mentioned events. It is expected that next year a larger carnival will be planned.
