William M. Butterfield was born in New York City, the only child of B.V. and Betty Butterfield. He was a World War II Veteran, having served in the 303rd Infantry Regiment in Europe and Asiatic Pacific Theaters, and earning a Bronze Star.
He and his wife moved to Saranac Lake with their three children in 1955 where he worked for the Saranac Lake Central Schools as an English teacher and counselor.
In his youth he was an athlete, playing football, basketball, tennis and golf; in later years he coached and officiated in football and basketball.
He was remembered fondly by his students.
