Great Western Savings and Loan started in 1919 in Southern California. They started buying other Savings and Loan institutions but allowing the newly acquired institutions to keep their own name. In 1970, they made all the institutions go by the same name, Great Western (Savings and Loan). Great Western Savings and Loan came to Santa Cruz County by buying Northern California Savings and Loan on July 31, 1982. On January 31, 1987 Great Western Savings and Loan changed the name to Great Western Bank.
In early 1997 California thrift H.F. Ahmanson & Co. (Home Savings of America) launched a hostile takeover bid for the Great Western Bank, but a friendly offer from Washington Mutual won out later that year. On October 1, 1997 Great Western Bank merged and became part of Washington Mutual Bank. Since Washington Mutual had an office near the River Street location, the branch at 75 River Street was closed in 1998. That address was later acquired by Coast Commercial Bank.
