The University of San Francisco (USF) is a Jesuit Catholic private university that was established in 1855, making it the first university in San Francisco. It is located near the geographic center of San Francisco, and has had many famous alumni including Bill Russell of basketball fame, former governor of California Pat Brown (aka Jerry Brown's father), founder of Rolling Stone magazine Charles Fracchia, Gordon Bowker who co-founded Starbucks, the 46th president of Peru Alejandro Toledo, and many more. The University is also a large employer in San Francisco and has been an integral part of the city since its inception.
