The Okie community is a community descended from white farmers who migrated to California, stereotypically from Oklahoma but also from elsewhere in the Great Plains and Southwest, fleeing economic disaster in the Dust Bowl era of the 1930s. More of the migrants were from Oklahoma than any other state, and a total of approximately 15% of the Oklahoma population moved to California - many of them settling in the Yuba-Sutter area, especially in Olivehurst. The term "Okie" is often considered derogatory, although there is no direct equivalent not considered derogatory.
