The cultivation of certain plants, especially trees, is restricted by law in some areas or situations. The reasons for restricting the cultivation of certain plant species include invasive weed status, structural weaknesses, disease or insect susceptibility, messy fruit, excessive thorniness, short life, destructive root systems, or excessive maintenance needs associated with some species.
Marysville
Per Marysville Municipal Code § 11.16.060, it is illegal in Marysville to plant any of the following species along any public street or where they may overhang any public street.
- palm (all species in the palm tree family)
- pine and fir (all species in the pine family)
- yew (all species in the yew family)
- wattle (all species in the Acacia genus, including wattles)
- poplar and cottonwood (all species in the Populus genus, including poplars and cottonwoods)
- gum tree and mallee (all species in the Eucalyptus genus, including gum trees and mallees)
- Chinese tree-of-heaven
- silk tree
- honeylocust
- Eastern black walnut
- white mulberry
- black locust
- American elm
Per Marysville Municipal Code § 18.86.060 and § 18.86.070, it is illegal in Marysville for a multifamily residence (such as a duplex or apartment complex) to have lawn on more than 50% of the landscaped area, or for a commercial or industrial development or a model home to have lawn on more than 25% of the landscaped area. It is also illegal in Marysville for any property other than a single-family home to have any lawn area that is less than eight feet wide and eight feet long.
California
The California Plant Quarantine and Pest Control provides quarantine authority against weeds marked A or Q throughout the state of California, and against weeds marked B or C in selected counties, based on individual county weed policy (described in parentheses following the B or C mark). Plants on the Q list are still pending final determination of which list they should be assigned to.
The term "Limited Quarantine," as used on this page, means that a plant will be barred from the county only if it is found in seed for planting or at the discretion of the Agricultural Commissioner.
The federal Plant Protection Act provides quarantine authority against weeds marked "Federal Quarantine" below. These mature plants, seeds, or other parts capable of propagation shall not be moved across state lines unless under permit from the USDA. For material moving within the State, a State permit is sufficient.
