Hanging Rock State Park is a 9011-acre area located in the eastern most Appalachian Mountains, within a smaller range of mountains called the Sauratown Mountains. Hanging Rock State Park is part of the North Carolina State Park system, supervised by the North Carolina Division of Parks and Recreation.

Location

Hanging Rock Mountain is located in Stokes County, four miles northwest from Danbury, 30 miles north of Winston-Salem, NC. The state park is located in a smaller mountain range called the Sauratown Mountain range, the eastern most section of the Appalachian Mountain range in North Carolina. The Sauratown Mountain Range includes: Hanging Rock Mountain, Flat Shoal Mountain and Pilot Mountain.

The park contains a compliment of attractions to visit including cascades, waterfalls, caves, a 12-acre lake and two mountains named "Flat Shoals Mountain" and "Hanging Rock Mountain" due to the protruding rock from the summit of the mountain.

Apart from the sites and natural aesthetic of conservation areas, the park offers a variety of activities for patrons and educators of the outdoors including:

History

Hanging Rock State park was originally founded in 1935 by the Stokes County Committee for Hanging Rock, starting with only 3096-acres of land donated by the Winston-Salem Foundation. 

Between 1935 and 1942 the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) built facilities on the state park to allow ease of use within the park's boundaries. These facilities constitute a park road, a parking lot, picnic areas and shelters, hiking trails, a dam for the 12-acre lake (1938) and a stone bathhouse among other buildings. In 1991, the National Register of Historic Places added the bathhouse as an accepted historic site.
