Frederick Sheffield inherited Camp Iroquois from his father, James R. Sheffield.  He rowed in the 1924 Summer Olympic Games, part of the American boat which won the gold medal in the eights.

He graduated from Yale College and Yale Law School, and became a corporate lawyer and a philanthropist.  He served on the Temporary Study Commission on the Future of the Adirondacks that led to the creation of the Adirondack Park Agency.  He also served on the board of the Trudeau Institute.
