Johann August Jaensch & Emilie Wilhelmine nee WINKELMANN

Hilda Ethel Cecelia JAENSCH

Born 20/3/1890 at Echunga, Hilda Jaensch was the eldest daughter of August Jaensch and his wife Wilhelmine Mine (pronounced Meena) nee Winkelmann. The family moved often as August sought to earn a living variously as butcher, farmer and labourer in Echunga, Hahndorf, Wistow, Adelaide and then Jupiter Creek by the early 1900s.

At this stage, it would appear likely that Hilda came to live with her grandparents, Christian and Maria Jaensch, in Hahndorf, in order to receive her schooling at St Michael’s Lutheran School across the main road. c1913, her own family shifted finally to a two-storey residence, formerly flour miller August Wittwer’s home, which the Jaensches named Hovea, opposite the recently closed flour mill in Hahndorf’s main street. Here, August and Wilhelmine Jaensch lived for the rest of their lives.

Hilda Jaensch married Wilhelm Liersch on 21/4/1927 at St Michael’s Lutheran Church Hahndorf. It is believed that the Liersches went farming in Western Australia at some stage, before eventually retiring to Tusmore in suburban Adelaide. Hilda Liersch died on 29/7/1955, outliving her husband by only six days.
