The Jaensch family settled in Hahndorf in 1839 and were one of the most prosperous families in the district for many years.  Johann Christian Erdmann Jaensch was one of the trustees chosen by the settlers to hold the land they wished to take up, and negotiated loans with W.H.Dutton and partners.
J. Christian Jaensch Jnr. established one of Hahndorf’s first butcher’s shops on these premises where he lived and operated the family business for many years.  The butcher’s shop was located in a room at the northern end of the building.
