But on the Other Hand

How often have you heard someone say “I know it like the back of my hand”?  Next time you hear that, ask the person to actually describe the back of their hands and you’ll find they are quite unable to do so.  The front of the hands (the palms) is also taken for granted by most people, and yet there’s lots of information to be found there.

Aside from the retina of the eye, there are more nerve endings on the palms of the hand and the soles of the feet than other parts of the body, and a huge part of the brain is dedicated to these nerves.  This means that what happens in the brain is reflected on the palms.  Famous people like Socrates and Aristotle were palmists, and Kant the philosopher called the palms “man’s external brain”.  There’s lots of different opinions about how to get the best information from the palms.  My personal belief is based on the “right brain, left brain” idea.  The left side of the brain controls the right side of the body and the right brain controls the left side.  The left side of the brain has most of the “externals” in it (language, logic etc.), while the right side has more of the inner/intuitive parts.  Because of this, I read the right hand as the place to look to find how a person presents themselves to the world, and the left hand shows what’s going on inside.  Have a close look at the lines on your hands and you are likely to find some interesting differences.

The Life Line

The life line starts on the edge of the hand somewhere between the thumb and first finger, and travels around the base of the thumb.  This “base of the thumb” is called the mount of Venus, and it shows the amount of life energy (vitality) in a person.  Everybody wants to know if they have a long lifeline because they think this means a long life, but this is not so.  If you think about it, a person with a long lifeline can still be involved in a fatal accident, a line on your hand won’t be any protection.  We should really call this line the line of vitality, because this is what it shows.  A deep red line with a “full” mount of Venus means the person has lots of vitality (life energy).  The lines on our hands change quite quickly, so when it comes to the future, we can read the line of vitality on the basis of “all other things remaining the same”.  Breaks, gaps, loops and all sorts of markings appear at different times, and it’s useful to know what to look out for because it’s we ourselves who really control our future.

The Heart Line (The emotions)

The more you look at your hands, the more you’ll find they truly reflect the real you.  The heart line is a good example of this.  It starts on the side of the hand under the little finger and runs across the hand.  If it ends under the first finger, it’s the mark of a person who is prone to have high expectations of others.  They are very trusting and like to believe people, and because of this they are sometimes too easily “sucked in”.  It’s very rare to see this on both hands.  If it only appears on the left hand, this attribute is part of their inner self and may be controlled by the more logical outer self.  If it only appears on the right hand, the urge to trust too soon may be controlled by an inner “gut feel” that calls for caution.

The area between the first and second fingers is the loyalty area.  When the heart line ends here, or actually runs right up between the fingers, it’s the mark of a person who likes to show loyalty.  When the heart line ends under (or runs up into) the middle finger, it’s the sign of a person who has an emotional connection to their feelings of right and wrong.  This is a very fine personal quality but it comes at a price, the price of emotional upset when things don’t seem fair and just.  In most cases, the heart line is divided into two or three “prongs”.... most of us have more than one attribute to our emotions.  The general condition of the heart line is a good indicator of a person’s current emotional situation.  If it’s a clean line, well defined and with no fraying, it’s the mark of a person who is carrying no emotional stress.  These people are “down to earth” and deal with emotional problems as they come along, and then easily leave them behind.  If on the other hand the line is fragmented and has lines crossing it, it’s evidence of emotional hurt still being carried.  Often these damaged lines appear on the left hand (inner self) far more than on the right hand (outer self).  Look at your heart lines and see what you find.

The Fate Line (sometimes called the line of Destiny)

The most straightforward Fate Line runs vertically down the middle of the palm, but very few people have one of these.  Often it’s forked, in two or three parts, or not there at all.  If it appears on the left hand only, there’s a “fate” that needs to be found and followed.  If it’s on the right hand only, it means there are things a person is doing that they don’t really want to be doing.  If there’s no fate line at all, life can be a relaxing journey with no major pulls or pushes.

Sometimes the fate line is not vertical, but runs diagonally down the palm .... the place where it ends indicates it’s nature.  This can sometimes be a bit complicated but the most frequent place for a diagonal fate line to end (or head towards) is the area opposite the base of the thumb.  This is called the mount of Luna (every part of the hand is the mount of something or the plain of something and every area has a significance).  The mount of Luna has to do with intuitional and spiritual things .... often the person with a diagonal fate line ending in (or near) the mount of Lunar has a need to come to grips with a deeper meaning to life .... a higher reason for being.  If you’re unsure about what your fate line might be trying to tell you, take advantage of the free offer mentioned above.

The Head Line

The Head Line runs across the palm from a point just below the first finger and just above the thumb.   It’s an interesting Line and is quite often different on each hand.  The left hand shows what’s happening “inside” and the right hand shows what is being projected into the outside world.  If the Head Line is very straight, logic rules and the more curved it is, the more a person puts “heart into the head”.... sometimes it’s straight on one hand and curved on the other.

The way the Head Line sits with the Life Line is also interesting.  The Life Line runs around the base of the thumb and mostly starts with the Head Line. If there’s a gap between the starting point of these two lines, the person needs lots of physical space and likes to have plenty of time alone, but if the lines are joined, the person likes company.   If the Head Line runs right across the palm to the other side, it’s a different line altogether and the subject for another day.
