NCAA Southern Conference Division 1

Summary

The NCAA Southern Conference is an entitiy of the NCAA. This conference is one of the oldest recognized NCAA conferences, boasting 95 seasons since 1921. This conference was started because there was no longer enough room in other conferences for all of the up and coming schools. After it's organization, the Southern Conference itself got too large and split. With the Appalachian Mountains as the dividing line the Southern Conference split into two creating the South Eastern Conference. The Southern Conference went through many more changes from its inception to today but continues as a well respected conference. In 2008 they created the hall of fame for outstanding Southern Conference Student Athletes. Among football the southern conference includes baseball, wrestling, mens and women's basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, tennis outdoor and indoor track and field and women's softball and volleyball.

Members of the Conference

There are currently 11 institutions spanning five states that are members of this conference: Alabama, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. Current league members are Appalachian State, The Citadel, Davidson, Elon, Furman, Georgia Southern, UNCG, Samford, Chattanooga, Western Carolina and Wofford. Many colleges have dropped out of the conference through the years while others have joined. Following the 2013-2014 season Appalachian State (Sun Belt), Davidson (Atlantic 10), Elon (Colonial) and Georgia Southern (Sun Belt) will all leave the league.
