Pre-Colonial History of Attica

The area which would be Attica was call by the natives in the region Gwete-Ta-A-Nete-Car-Do-Oh which means "The Red Village". The "Red Village" referred to the Wyoming Hills and the clay soil that was prominent. Attica also sits about 1000 ft above the body of water the Seneca called the Ta:nowo:nde or "swift water".

Tonawanda Seneca Nation

The Tonawanda Seneca Nation are a tribe of Seneca natives that resided in the region near the Tonawanda and eventually the Tonawanda Indian Reservation. They split off from the main Seneca Nation in 1857 becoming their own nation after a disagreement with the results of the treaty the Seneca had signed with the US government.

The Tonawanda Band consists of eight clans: the Snipe, the Heron, the Hawk, the Deer, the Wolf, the Beaver, the Bear, and the Turtle.
