The first Moxie Java was founded in 1988 by Jerome Eberharter who had been operating it under a division of White Cloud Coffee Inc., the company he also founded in 1986. White Cloud Coffee Inc. is a 4 million-a-year dollar business that distributes coffee to local grocery stores and retail outlets through out the United States. In 2001, Eberharter expanded the White Cloud Company adding more than 300 grocery stores in the Los Angeles area. The growth of the company was occurring too rapidly and Eberharter thought it was best to give ownership of Moxie Java up to ensure that the White Cloud Company would remain flourishing. It wasn’t in the terms of the agreement when the ownership got changed from Eberharter to Rick and Stephanie Dean, but, the White Cloud Company remains the exclusive supplier for Moxie Java stores in the Valley. Since Moxie Java was originally founded in 1988, more that sixty-five stores across the nation have opened. Entrepreneurs have the option of opening an entire location or just a simple single espresso cart like the ones set up at venues such as the Ada County Fair, and the Steelhead Hockey games. "It's a diamond in the rough," Rick Dean said. "Our goal is to have the Moxie Java brand name be recognized just like Starbucks is." Rick and his wife Stephanie used to be farmers, they traded from growing one bean, the garbanzo bean, for that of a coffee bean. Moxie Java’s headquarters are located at 4990 W. Chinden Boulevard in Garden City, Idaho. Most of the roasting that comes from this store is shipped out to over seventy other Moxie Java’s throughout the U.S. Moxie shops serve drip coffee, mochas, espresso, and latte’s, along with crushed fruit Breezas, frappuccinos, and many snack options. “Dean likes to point out a subtle taste difference in Moxie coffee: It isn't bitter and the beans aren't burned, he notes. Despite the chain's growth, Moxie still employs a "master roaster" who roasts the coffee in small batches with a single machine.”
