The event known as the “Tour De Fat” is an intriguing and yet peculiar experience that has been coming to the town of Boise since 2002. The Tour De Fat is sponsored by the New Belgium beer company Fat Tire and consists of a bike marathon that includes outrageous costumes and goofy modifications to people’s bicycles. The event itself travels to several cities across the U.S. every year and is held to support the use of bicycles and aid in spreading the knowledge of eco-friendly travel. The sponsors of the event even offer a brand new custom bicycle to anyone who is willing to trade their car in for the race for a healthier environment. The event starts off as a group bicycle marathon starting and ending at the location of Ann Morrison Park. After the bike ride there is a large festival with beer, food, games, live music and outrageously entertaining bicycle events. The bicycle ride and fair-like atmosphere provides a welcoming environment for families and people of all ages. Aside from creating an event of entertainment for the people of Boise, a large amount of the proceeds from this event are donated to numerous bicycle related associations such as the Boise Bike Project, The Treasure Valley Cycling Alliance and Southwest Idaho Mountain Biking Association. The Tour De Fat is an efficient way to introduce community enjoyment as well as support a cause that is beneficial to the city of Boise and towns everywhere.
