Municipal Life

The Town of Castine is governed by a Town Meeting form of government. A traditional form of government in much of New England, Town Meeting is dominated by it's namesake, which is generally a single, annual meeting of all the townspeople each year where the town's "warrant" is approved. The warrant itemizes issues up for a vote, where each townsperson gets a single vote. If you are unable to attend town meeting ,you generally do not get to vote. Besides the annual meeting, the executive branch of the government is most often given to a "Select Board," sometimes fashioned a Board of Selectmen or Selectpeople.

In Castine, as of our November 2017 election, the Board of Selectpeople is comprised of:

  • Gus Basile, chair (2018)
  • Peter Vogell (2019)
  • Colin Powell (2020)
