East Hills Center (of the Universe) is a LEED Certified building with a Double Gold Rating developed by Bazzani and Associates in collaboration with the East Hills Council of Neighbors. The building won one of the state's first Cool Cities grants and also received grant funding from the Grand Rapids Community Foundation. The former gas station site sat vacant and polluted for decades until grassroots action brought it to the re-development table. The formerly polluted site is now one of the "greenest" spots in the Midwest. A combination of a vegetated roof and a rain garden makes it the first zero storm water runnoff development in the city.
