Alf Bergthun was a Norwegian sailor, curing at Stony Wold sanatorium. He had been a sailor on the M/S Brimanger. On a list of donations to seamen at Stony Wold, a Norwegian charitable organization noted that, in addition to the 2 sets of pajamas, 2 sets of underwear and 3 pairs of socks that all the patients were being given, Bergthun also needed shirts, a suit and shoes.

In a letter dated December 27, 1944, to John Pedersen at Bloomingdale, Harry Nilsson wrote "Have a report from Potts that Bergthun is very sick with double pneumonia. He is not expected to live."
