Helen Ratner came to Saranac Lake for the cure in the winter of 1923-1924. She stayed at Trudeau Sanatorium. Her parents were Russian-Jewish immigrants born in Ukraine. Her father, Leo, was a physician, and he passed away sometime around 1921. Her mother stayed with her in Saranac Lake while her brothers cared for one another in New York City.

Helen kept a photo album from approximately 1914 to 1928, which included photographs of her time at Trudeau Sanatorium.
