Clara Ann Congdon (1881-1923) was the daughter of Adelaide Louise (nee Tuton) Congdon (1844-1933). Clara had rheumatoid arthritis and spent time in several sanatoria, including one in California. It is unclear whether she also had tuberculosis. In this 1908 postcard to her mother, she signs as “Kit.”

"This view from the hill on which Trudeau’s Adirondack Cottage Sanatorium is situated. The stone structure at the left is the chapel which is very pretty. The cottage marked X is The Richardson, one of those we were shown through. Feb 8, ‘08" Saranac Lake, N.Y. View from Sanitarium. Next week at this time I shall surely be with you so cheer up. Much love, Kit.” Image of postcard courtesy of John Rumbold

Feb. 6, 1908, P.M. "Dear Mother, This is one of the photos of the crowd of twenty, as we started off on our sleigh ride last Thursday. We had four dandy horses + a jolly driver and there was plenty of straw and robes to make us comfortable. This photo was taken in from of the Administrative Department of the San. A crowd of us were to visit Trudeau's Sanatorium today, but we've had quite a blizzard. 40 degrees below zero at 7. am. yesterday. Expect a letter tomorrow. Kit."
