The 2015 Walk & Run for rare is our sixth annual family-friendly event in support of the Every Child Outdoors (ECO) environmental program. Kicking things off at Riverbluffs Park in Cambridge, participants will follow the trails along the Grand River to our rare ECO Centre where we will celebrate our achievements with a BBQ and entertainment.
Nature trails with unique interpretive stops!
You can walk or run! Whatever you feel more comfortable with. The fun-run component will follow the Grand Trunk trail (the main trail) for 5km, and walkers will have the option to off-shoot onto smaller side trails where interpretive stops will be set up.

rare Charitable Research Reserve
Founded in 2001, the rare Charitable Research Reserve is a 900+ acre urban land trust and nature reserve situated at the confluence of the Grand and Speed Rivers in the heart of the Waterloo Region. The reserve is a beautiful and culturally significant landscape rich in biodiversity. We strive to preserve the land for future generations by focusing on conservation, research and education.
We serve Waterloo Region and beyond by offering opportunities for schools and the public to get outside recreationally, or take part in educational events. Our community gardens allow community members to grow their own food as well as the chance to volunteer their time in our Food Bank Garden growing food for those in need, and our 8 km of trails open to the public offers the community passive recreation and the opportunity to engage with nature.
At rare, we also take seriously the role we play in fostering the next generation of environmental conservationists. We strive to provide inspiring programs and activities for children that foster an inquisitive, explorative mind! Our Chain of Learning model extends research from top scientists to the youngest of learners helping them gain the skills they need to think critically about their environment. We do this through our Every Child Outdoors (ECO) environmental programming. While here, children partake in hands-on activities where they have fun in nature and explore being a young scientist. We feel every child should have the opportunity to be a part of nature programs that can spark a passion in them – regardless of their ability to pay. We consider ourselves lucky to be a part of a likeminded community – one that understands the importance of preserving this 900+ acre urban nature reserve and educating our community on the importance access to nature plays in our lives. With your support we are able to further our efforts in education through ECO.
At rare we take seriously the role we play in fostering the next generation of environmental conservationists. Throughout the years, the Walk & Run for rare has generated funds and awareness to help support education staff; renovations to, and the completion of, our educational hub, the rare ECO Centre; provide educational supplies; provide bus and camp subsides for children attending ECO; and so much more. To date, we have seen over 10,000 youth participate in ECO, and now an average of 2,500 a year – but we’re not done yet! Thank you for supporting our efforts in the healthy development of our youngest citizens through ECO and ensuring that this land is here for future generations.
