A pedestrian crossover is a kind of traffic control that gives pedestrians the right-of-way over vehicles, without changing right-of-way relationships between vehicles. Pedestrian crossovers can be located both at intersections and mid-block.

Since January 2016, drivers are only allowed to proceed through a crossover once all pedestrians have stepped off the roadway.

History

For most of its existence, Mississauga has avoided installing crossovers, preferring stop signs or traffic signals instead. In 2016, a new provincial regulation came into force, allowing more variety in how crossovers can be set up, and since then the city has installed a number of them, mainly on less busy streets near schools.
