The following homicide statistics come from the FBI Uniform Crime Report. Each city is required to submit official crime statistics to the FBI on a yearly basis. It is often recognized as the "official" numbers, but one thing to consider is that crime reports and data can change, so these numbers reflect homicide statistics when submitted to the FBI for that year.

The following numbers represent unjustified homicides (murders and non-negligent manslaughters) for each year between 1985 and 2019, excluding 1995 as the FBI deemed that Oakland's submission did not meet the Uniform Crime Report standards. As defined by the FBI, these numbers do not include justified officer-involved shootings, negligent manslaughter (often known as involuntary manslaughter), attempts to kill, assaults to kill, suicides, and accidental deaths.
