Olathe is the county seat of Johnson County, Kansas, United States. It is located in northeastern Kansas in the southwestern part of the larger Kansas City metropolitan area.
The city was incorporated in 1857 and the city name is the Shawnee Indian word for beautiful. It originally sprung up from activity along the Oregon-California and Santa Fe trails. The population is approximately 134,000.
Olathe is home to many neighborhood parks and has extensive public trails. The public school system has approximately 30,000 students housed in 35 elementary schools, 9 middle schools, and 5 senior high schools. The city also claims campuses for four institutions of higher learning.
