Novant Health Franklin Medical Center was established in 1951 to serve the people of Franklin County.  Federal Hill-Burton funds supported the construction of the hospital, which was named Franklin Memorial Hospital.

A Naples, Florida based system, Management Associates, Inc. (HMA) purchased the hospital in 1986.  HMA owns and operates facilities primarily in the southeast and southwest of the United States and is a privately-held, publicly-traded company on the New York Stock Exchange. (HMA)

Franklin Medical Center underwent major renovations in 1988 and 1989 adding an Intensive Care Unit, exterior facade, cafeteria and other additional services at that time. In 1995 and 1996, Franklin Medical Center was named a Top 100 Hospital by HCIA/ Mercer Report.

In 1999, Franklin Medical Center added an Emergency Department and outpatient area. The 8,500-square-foot addition houses eight treatment bays with two full trauma suites as well as an orthopedic procedure room and a room for the care of pediatric patients. In addition, the 3,000 feet of renovated space houses additional space for the Diagnostic Imaging Department and Cardiopulmonary Services.

In 2008, Novant Health joined with HMA to hold a minority interest in Franklin Medical Center as well as assume full responsibility of their employed physician clinics. In October 2009, Novant Health took over controlling interest of Franklin Medical Center and the hospital began full integration into Novant Health.

Novant Health, a not-for-profit organization, serves more than five million residents from Virginia to South Carolina. In 2011, Jody Morris assumed the role of president of Franklin Medical Center and COO of the Triangle market.

In 2012, Franklin Medical Center opened a 13-bed geriatric psychiatry unit to focus on the special mental health needs of older patients, a growing and underserved population nationally.   The 7,500-square-foot center was designed for increased supervision and attention to safety risks of these particularly vulnerable patients.
