Block Island (town of New Shoreham) is located approximately 12 miles off the coast of Rhode Island across from Point Judith and Galilee.  The island is approximately 10 square miles, of which more than 40% of the land has been set aside for conservation.  The Nature Conservancy has added Block Island to its list of "The Last Great Places", which consists of twelve sites in the Western Hemisphere of the world.

Block Island is a popular summer tourist destination and is known for its bicycling, hiking, sailing, fishing, and beaches. The island hosts two historic lighthouses: Block Island North Light, on the northern tip of the island, and Block Island Southeast Light, on the southeastern side. Much of the northwestern tip of the island is an undeveloped natural area and resting stop for birds along the Atlantic Flyway.^[10]

Annual Events

Every summer the island hosts Block Island Race Week, a competitive, week-long sailboat race. On odd years, the event is held by the Storm Trysail Club, and on even years by the Block Island Race Week. Yachts compete in various classes, sailing courses in Block Island Sound and circumnavigating the island.^{[citation needed]}

Other popular events include the annual Block Island Triathlon held in early August, the Taste of Block Island in late May and end of September, and the Block Island Music Festival - featuring 50 New England bands over a six night period.

Fishing (Salt & Freshwater)

Block Island Sound is home to a large variety of fish, ranging from bass and bluefish to fluke, large albacore, bonito, and swordfish.  The island is also home to many hidden freshwater ponds which feature perch, pickerel, catfish, bass, and pike.

Transportation

Block Island can be accessed by ferry from Point Judith, RI or Montauk Point, NY, as well as by a 12 minute flight from Westerly, RI.

Accommodations

The town of New Shoreham has a few large hotels located in Old Harbor near the main ferry dock, as well as Victorian bed & breakfast, inns, and rental properties. The Block Island Chamber of Commerce has a thorough listing of the various options.  The island also has a number of rental property companies which can handle overnight stays for a couple to month long visits with a large party. 

Restaurants

Most of the restaurants on Block Island are located near the downtown Water Street area, however the island serves up a number of great dining options.  The island currently has 44 restaurants, featuring local fresh seafood and a mix of eclectic fare.

Nature Trails

Despite its relatively small size of 10 square miles, Block Island has more than 28 miles of hiking trails and 17 miles of beautiful beaches for walking.  Rodman's Hollow is a 230 acre protected tract with trails that run below sea level in some spots and stretch to the sea.

Beaches

Block Island boasts more than 17 miles of pristine coastline for relaxing in the sun, swimming, and surfing.  Admission to all beaches and parking on the island is free.
