- E. R. Lay
- Né à Westfield (Mass.) le 1er juillet 1834, fait ses premières armes dans le secteur de la peinture aux États-Unis. En juillet 1871, il entre dans le commerce des cravaches (« whips ») dans la firme « Bishop Lay & Beals » de Westfield. En 1889, il lance la « Lay Whip Company » à Rock Island, une branche de la « Lay Whip Company » de Westfield, qui prendra ensuite le nom de « United States Whip Company » (suite à une série de fusions, ca1893). Depuis mars 1901, la compagnie est cependant complètement indépendante et les actions sont majoritairement détenues par M. Lay, ses deux fils et T. J. Norris.
