  • “The Old Yellow Store”
    • Built in 1809, by Hon. Timothy Hinman. It was first occupied by Nehemiah Colby, of Derby. The property has passed through various hands and is now owned by the heirs of the Hon. P. Baxter. The store has been successively occupied by Baxter & Chamberlin, Baxter & Edmonds, Judd, Bates & Holmes, Judd, Bates & Wood, Baxter, French and Haskell, P. & J. W. Baxter, and Porter & Wiley. (p. 33)
  • Charles Pierce:
    • From 1834 to 1840, but little change occurred in the settlement. Willard Wood, Benjamin Wyman, and others were actively engaged in business and acquired property. Charles Pierce, and enterprising mechanic, built extensively, and laid the foundation for a large business in the manufacture of boots and shoes. He died suddenly and the business passed into the hands of Austin Foster. (p. 34-35)

  • « Pioneer Life on the Frontier », Feb. 7, 1952
    • 1835: There was but one building (the old Yellow) btw the bridge and the Kelly House on the right hand of the road. On the other side were Foster & Spalding’s, the Gaylord and Walton building, the Wood tailor shop (now O’Rourke) and the Spalding dwelling house on the corner.
    • Stanstead Journal: first printed in the Wood building. The present office was for a dwelling house, for a person known in those days as “Abe Wheeler”. Since 1860, except for a few years the printing presses have been run by the same power that runs the machinery in the ad- …ining factory. The “Mammoth store” was built on the site of the old saw mill and lumber yard.

    • L’acte confirme la vente d’une parcelle de terre de 7 « rods » sur l’axe Ouest-Est par « 15 rods » sur l’axe Nord-Sud, du lot no 1 du 9e rang du canton de Stanstead (secteur Rock Island) ; plus précisément, le terrain touche au Sud à la « bye road », à l’Ouest à une autre terre d’Otis Warren (vendeur), au Nord à la terre de A. Kilborn et à l’Est partiellement le même terrain de Kilborn et à celui de la veuve Fanny Haskell .
      • Willard Wood est un tailleur (« tailor ») qui tient commerce à Rock Island [terrain de son commerce ??].
