Castro Community On Patrol (CCOP) is a community group dedicated to keeping the Castro safe. It was formed in 2006 in response to the violent assaults taking place against those in the Castro. It is funded by Safety Awareness For Everyone (SAFE) and works with the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD) and the Mayors Office to promote safety. Volunteers patrol the neighborhood and do educational outreach.
CCOP distributes safety whistles to the public. If you carry the whistle with you when you go out, you can blow it if you find yourself in an unsafe situation. The whistle will alert others in the area to you so you can get help. CCOP has given out over 75,000 safety whistles since 2006.
