San Francisco State University’s Fine Arts building was built in 1990; within the construction of this building a 3,500 square foot gallery was created, The Fine Arts Gallery. This gallery was made to host a series of artist exhibitions like Master of Fine Arts Exhibition and Stillwell Undergraduate Exhibition. The art exhibited here includes the work of SFSU students and are on display for students, faculty, alumni and general public to enjoy for free, the past exhibits go all the way back to 1994.
The Gallery’s mission is to showcase artwork that raises awareness and includes thought provoking pieces addressing social justice issues around the world. This unique space allows for artist exposure and the ability to make connections and build a strong sense of community. The Fine Arts Gallery does not just host static artwork, but also holds lectures, film screenings, performances, and includes extensive wall texts and handouts. These resources continue the conversation and inspire visitors to take action on social justice issues outside of the gallery.
This addition to SFSU LocalWiki will list all of the past exhibits displayed in the Fine Arts Gallery from 1994 to present day 2020, and because of recent events regarding the global pandemic I am also able to include links to virtual tours of the gallery and images from 2020 art exhibits.
