HISTORICAL INFORMATION: Since 1880, Hanover Square has played a vital role in Syracuse's commercial development. Still a functional service area, Hanover Square's retail/commercial history resulted from its proximity to the bustling Erie canal. Banks and theatres lined the square, which was known as Veterans Park in 1900.

Hanover Square is a National Register Historic District and a Local Preservation District whose buildings represent over 100 years of architecture sited on less than one acre. The square itself has undergone many changes. Initially serving as a transportation nexus for railroads and trolleys, it is now a major setting for ceremonial and cultural gatherings in the heart of downtown Syracuse. Shade trees and annual plantings complement the water sculpture and provide an inviting spot to brown bag your lunch and listen to a variety of entertainment programs
