TorCamp is a community of people in Toronto including designers, developers, marketers, PR people, executives, testers, quality assurance specialists, consultants, recruiters, network administrators, business developers, venture capitalists, angel investors, policy analysts, etc. The goal is to build an open community of individuals and companies. To provide open events to inspire and instill a sense of community in the Toronto technology scene.

TorCamp is a type of BarCamp. BarCamp is an ad-hoc gathering born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. It is an intense event with discussions, demos, and interaction from participants. A few basic camp rules have been adopted:

  1. We are equal individuals in an open community.

  2. Leadership can emerge from anywhere.

  3. We are all participants.

Although most Camps that have been organized by and for people in the technology scene. Some Camps such as Toronto Transit Camp and Toronto Open Cities have gone beyond the techie constituency and applied the "open source" framework to non-technology related issues such as public transit and the openness of cities.
