BOETTGER, PTE. HUGH LEWIS Reg. # 657983

Hugh Lewis Boettger was born January 4, 1897 in Chapman Township, the son of Ludwig Carl Adolph Boettger and Bertha Marie Bruckner, At the time of the 1891and1901censuses, Hugh lived with his parents in Chapman Township. Hugh’s parents had moved into Magnetewan by the time of the 1911 census and although Hugh wasn’t listed as living with them at that time, he did identify Magnetewan as his home address in his Attestation Papers.

When Hugh enlisted on April 10, 1916 he listed his next of kin as his father, Louis Boettger of Magnetewan.

Hugh sailed on the S.S. Caronia, departing Halifax on November 1, 1911 and arriving in Liverpool on November 1, 1916.

In December he was assigned to the 36th Reserve Battalion in England.

On January 3, 1917 Hugh was identified as being seriously ill and on January 16, 1917 Hugh died of cerebrospinal meningitis.

It is interesting to note that although his cause of death is identified as being cerebrospinal meningitis, , he was initially admitted to hospital on December 22, 1916 with influenza.
