BOND, PTE ERNIE – Regimental #3033705
Ernie Bond was born February 18, 1892, son of Robert and Lucy Bond of McCauley Township, Muskoka. (Ernie Bond moved to the Whitestone area in the early 1920’s where he married Velma Folliott. Ernie and Velma (Folliott) Bond family lived in a small frame home which they built on the northeast corner of Lot 17 on the south side of what became Hwy 520).
Ernie enlisted in the 1st Depot Battalion, 1st Central Ontario Regiment on February 18, 1918. His medical records show Ernie as having been transferred to Whitby Military Hospital on December 4, 1918. At the time of his discharge, March 23, 1920, Ernie’s address was listed as St. Andrew’s Military Hospital, Toronto. In his discharge papers Ernie was listed as being in the 1st, 1st C.O.R. from February 18, 1918 until December 4, 1918 and in the C.A.M.C. (Canadian Army Medical Corps); M.D. No 2 (Military District 2 Central Ontario, Toronto) from December 4, 1918 until October 1st, 1919.
During his time in the Service, Ernie apparently received permanent damage to his throat. His hearing, which was temporarily lost was completely regained. (In his discharge papers, March 23, 1920, he was identified as having a scar over both mastoid regions of his skull, injuries which would certainly appear consistent with the temporary loss of hearing.)
