At the time of the 1921 census, Robert and Rebecca Elliott were identified as living in Magnetawan, Croft Township. Robert, age 71 was identified as a farmer. Living with Robert and Rebecca was the family of James and Mary Elliott. James, age 37 was also identified as a farmer.

James Hannah and Mary Alice (Hall) Elliott were identified as having 5 children, the youngest of which was a daughter, Viva, age 3.

James and Mary appear to have had only one son, Gordon Robert Clarence Elliot born February 24, 1911 when the family lived at Lot 1, Concession 8 Croft Twp.

The address used by students of Mr Grunig's Public School Class in Magnetawan to write to local men who were in the service of WWII

In responding to the children in Mr. Grunig’s class, Robert ‘Bob’ identified that at the time of writing he was somewhere in Holland.

The date on his letter was December 17, 1944.  In his letter he identified that he was with the S.D. and G. Highlanders. He further signed with the acronym C.A.O. – B.W.E.F. (Canadian Army Overseas).

Wikipedia provides the following note regarding the Stormant, Dundas and Glengary Highlanders:

“The regiment mobilized The Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Highlanders, CASF for active service on 24 May 1940. It was redesignated as the 1st Battalion, The Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Highlanders, CASF on 7 November 1940. The unit embarked for Great Britain on 19 July 1941. On D-Day, 6 June 1944, it landed in Normandy, France, as part of the 9th Infantry Brigade3rd Canadian Infantry Division, and it continued to fight in North West Europe until the end of the war. The overseas battalion was disbanded on 15 January 1946.”
