Jacob Henry Haerlen was born December 3, 1893 in Magnetawan to Jacob Haerlen and Maria Agnes Schmidt. The family is shown as having lived in Chapman Township at the time of the 1901 and 1911 censuses.
At the time of enlistment, Jacob Henry identified that he lived in Magnetawan as did his mother Mary who was listed as his next of kin.
In his discharge certificate, Jacob is identified as enlisting in the 2nd Depot Battalion, 2nd C.E.F. in Bacebridge on January 8, 1918. He was identified as serving in the 8th Reserve and C.F.C. (Canadian Forestry Corps - units designated to cut down and process trees to provide wood and lumber) in England.
He was discharged July 12, 1919.
