When the students of Godfrey Grunig’s class wrote to service men from Magnetawan, their letter was redirected to ‘Roman Way Convalescent Hospital’.

Gordon Keith Hollard was born in 1920 in Croft Twp. to Donald John and Edna Gertrude (Genoe) Hollard. At the time of the 1921 census the family lived in Croft Twp. Gordon married Verna Olive Wager in 1949.

Gordon was wounded (shot in the foot) by a German sniper in Germany. Apparently another German soldier helped him onto a porch and gave him a canteen with water. He told Gordon that his (Canadian) platoon was advancing on the area and should be there in about half an hour.

Gordon commented to the German soldier how good his English was. The ‘German’ said that he had lived in New York for 30 years, but had returned to Germany when called to fight for his country

Gordon died September 7, 1910 in Sudbury and is buried in Chapman Cemetery.

Gordon responded to the students of Godfrey Grunig’s class on December 5, 1941.
