Gilbert Jeffrey was born in December 1905 in Spence Twp. to Thomas and Clara Jeffrey.

Jeffrey was one of the soldiers to whom the students of Magnetawan Public School wrote during WWII.

Gilbert’s first letter back to the students.

Gilbert notes that he has been in action for 5 months and wonders how he would cope without the constant sound of big guns firing.

He notes that he is ahead of the artillery – so the shells of our own guns are going over him. And, when the enemy retaliates, things are made quite interesting.

In his letter Gilbert goes on to mention other soldiers from the area,

He also references having been at Caen and Falaise.

Gilbert again wrote on March 3, 1945.

At the time of writng, his unit was in Germany.

Gilbert’s last letter was written on June 25, 1945. He mentions meeting Cec Grunig at the Nimijgeon Transit Camp.
