Herbert Eldon Jenkins was born June 26, 1894, the son of Andrew and Elizabeth ‘Lily’ (Taylor) Jenkins.
At the time of the 1901 and 1911 censuses the family continued to live in Chapman Township. In 1911 the family was specifically identified as living on 11-18 Kent Street, Magnetawan. While his father and oldest brothers were identified as farmers in the 1911 census, 16 year old Herbert was identified as a labourer.
In his Attestation papers signed December 8, 1915 again identified himself as a labourer.
In his Discharge Certificate, Herbert was identified as having enlisted in the 123 Battalion in Toronto and to have served in France with the Canadian Forestry Corps.
Herbert is identified as having arrived in England on the S.S. Cameronia on August 8, 1916.
On October 18, 1916 he reported to the 20th Battalion in France and in November was attached to the 6th Field Engineers.
On November 5, 1917 Herbert received a gun shot wound to his right leg and was hospitalized,
In July 25, 1917 Herbert had been attached to the Canadian Forestry Corps and on Sept. 26 he arrived in France with the 9th Coy CFC. As noted, he was wounded Nov. 5, 1917.
At war’s end, Herbert was promoted to Sergeant.
After his discharge, Herbert returned to Canada where he was identified as living with his parents and siblings on Kent Street in Magnetawan at the time of the 1921 census.
On November 9, 1922 Herbert married Virginia Kathleen Lennox of Middlesex. Herbert identified himself as a carpenter in the wedding record. Both Herbert and Virginia identified hat they were living in Magnetawan at the time of their marriage. Herbert and Virginia had a son Edward in 1922.
Herbert died June 2, 1925 in York County, Ontario. He was identified as living on Front Street, Toronto. His death was by suicide.
As noted, Herbert was wounded on November 5, 1917. He was serving with the 20th Battalion of the Company Canadian Forestry Corps.
