LONG, SHAWN CHRISTOPHER, LEADING SEAMAN

Shawn was born December 11, 1981 to Mary Hollard and David Long. He is the grandson of Wilfred and Frances Hollard of Magnetawan.

Shawn enlisted in April of 2002 and graduated July 18, 2002 from the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School in Saint Jean sur Richelieu, Quebec as a Navy Bosin or Boatswain.

Shawn was immediately stationed in Esquimault on Vancouver Island. He subsequently rose to the rank of Leading Seaman.

Shawn volunteered to be deployed 6 months to the Gulf and was accepted to serve aboard the HMCS Protecteur from April 16, 2008 to October 25, 2008. This deployment culminated with Protecteur circumnavigating the Globe and saw Shawn earn the SSM Medal. (The Special Service Medal (SSM) was created to recognize members of the Canadian Forces (CF) who are taking part in activities and operations under exceptional circumstances.)

This mission was called Op. Altair Roto 4 and included time in the Gulf of Oman.
