Dougald ‘Dougie’ MacRae was a bomber pilot. On August 14, 1944 he volunteered to fly a special 1700 mile round trip flying a four engine Liberator bomber as part of 178 Squadron of the RAF. The mission was to fly return from Italy to Warsaw to drop supplies to freedom fighters in the Warsaw Uprising. Unfortunately, both the uprising and the mission were unsuccessful.

James MacRae was in the Sutherland Highlanders and a part of an Allied attempt to take the Falaise Gap was killed on August 15, 1944. The two brothers had been killed less than 24 hours apart.
