Lawrence May was the son of Desmonia ‘Dessie’ (Jenkins) May. Dessie was the daughter of Andrew Jenkins and Elizabeth ‘Lillie’ Taylor of Chapman Twp. At the time of the 1921 census Dessie and her son Lawrence lived with her parents in Magnetawan. (On January 25, 1922 Dessie married Albert Christian Noll in Burks Falls. Dessie was married under her maiden name of Jenkins and was identifed as a spinster. Of the many trees that include Dessie Jenkins, only one acknowledges that there may have been a second partner and a child – but no names given.)
Lawrence May, soldier was identified as living in Magnetawan according to the 1945 Voters List. At the time f the 1974 Voters List he lived in Burks Falls. (A Harry May, printer, was identifed also.)
Lawrence’s 1st letter to Magnetawan students appers to be January 26, 1945.
While not providing particulars, Lawrence indicates that he could use a pair of ski’s. He indicates there are no trees but that there are some stone age buikldings – one built by the Vikings.
Lawence’s second letter was written March 17, 1945.
In this letter, Lawrence notes that his 3 years service will be up in the fall, but he doesn’t know if he will make it.
He references the new 10 ton bomb that the Allies were using.
Lawrence wrote again on March 28, 1945.
The date on Lawrences last letter is obscured, but it was written after May 8, 1945 because he references the victory celebrations in London.
