In the family trees for the previously discussed John Henry McKinnon, the war records that are provided are actually for Hugh Duncan McKinnon.
Hugh Duncan McKinnon was born June 25, 1888 in Magnetawan, the son of Angus McKinnon and Mary Jane Roystone Elliott.
At the time of the 1891 census, the family was identified as living in the Chapman Croft Sub-District. At the time of the 1901 census the family was identified as living in Spence Twp.
By the time of the 1911 census, Hugh had moved out and was living in Seguin Falls, Monteith Twp. as a border with the Watkins family.
In his Attestation papers signed March 10, 1916 Hugh identified himself as a lumberman living in Sequin Falls.
In his Discharge Certificate, Hugh was identified as having enlisted on March 10, 1916 in the 162nd in Parry Sound. He is identified as having served with the 2nd Pioneers in Canada, England and France.
He was discharged in Halifax on August 23, 1919.
Hugh is identified as marrying Annie Smithers in St. Bartholomew, Surrey, England on December 24, 1917. They had four children: the first two born in Surrey, England and the later two born in Seguin Falls in the mid-1920’s. (By the time of the 1921 census, Hugh Annie and their first two children were identified as living in Seguin Falls.)
Andrew Hind wrote: “It wasn’t just the enemy that felled soldiers. Illness and disease stalked them as well. Hugh Duncan McKinnon was hospitalized many times for influenza and trench fever. His time overseas wasn’t all misery; he married an English lass, Annie Smither, and brought her back to Parry Sound to start a family.”

In his Discharge Certificate, Hugh is identified as having joined the 162nd on March 10, 1916; and as having served with the 2nd Pioneer Battalion in Canada, England and France. He was discharged August 23, 1919.
Hugh arrived in Liverpool, England on November 11, 1916 on the S. S. Caronia.
He was almost immediately transferred to the 2nd Pioneers.
