At the time of the 1891 census, the family was identified as living in Bracebridge.
At the time of the 1901 census, the family was identified as living in Chapman Township. In his Attestation papers signed March 11, 1916, Malcolm identified that he lived in Orillia and worked as a grocery clerk. His mother was identified as Effie McKinnon also living in Orillia.
In his Discharge Certificate, Malcolm is identified as having enlisted in the Canadian Field Artillery in Kingston on March 11, 1916. He is identified as having served in the 3rd Battery of the Canadian Field Artillery in France.
He was discharged April 24, 1919.
Malcolm married Ethel Joy Went in Simcoe County, on September 15, 1921.
Malcolm arrived in England on May 5, 1916 on the Empress of Britain.
In October he was ‘Taken on Strength’ in France.
His initial posting was to the 12th CFA Brigade but ‘due to reorganization’ was subsequently posted to the 1st Brigade in March of 1917.
In May of 1917 while with the 4th CFA Unit he was wounded in the abdomen by a sniper bullet.
In June Malcolm appears to have returned to his unit.
On September 31, 1918 he was appointed A/Bombardier
