MINTIE, PTE. ASHLEY Reg. #2102

Ashley Seymour Mintie was born February 17, 1879,  the son of James and Ellen (Campbell) Mintie in Parry Sound District. At the time oof the 1881 and 1891 censuses, the family was shown in the Laurier, Lount and Machar Sub-District.

Ashley’s mother Ellen Campbell died March 18, 1892 in Parry Sound District.

It is not clear where the family was at the time of the 1901 census, but in April 1909, Ashley was shown to cross into the United States from Canada  (family historians show the reverse direction – but that is not what the record actually shows).

In his Attestation papers, signed November 20, 1914 in Vancouver, Ashley identifed that he was born in Craigville, Ontario, May 7, 1879. He identified his next of kin as his father James Mintie of South River, Ontario. He identifed his trade as a blacksmith.

In his Discharge Certificate, Ashley is identified to have enlisted in the 2nd Canadian Divisional Force in Vancouver on November 20, 1914.

He is identified as serving with the 2nd Division Force in France and Canada.

Following the war, Ashley was shown as applying for a Manitoba, Saskatchewan and Alberta Homestead Grant on April 22, 1920.

From Family History records, it would appear that Ashley married Clara Eliza Delessandri while overseas. They had 4 children, all born after Clara came to Canada.

Ashley died before 1919 in Hudson Bay, Saskatchewan.

On April 17, 1915, Ashley sailed for England.

In May he was admitted to hospital and was not discharged until sometime between June and September.

Ashley is identified as disembarking at Havre on September 16, 1915.

He was promoted to Lance Corporal on January 2, 1916.

On February 11 he was promoted to Staff Sergeant.

Throughout his service, Ashley was in and out of hospital, primarily from ailments stemming from Trench Warfare.
