REID, LT. THOMAS LOGAN

Thomas Logan Reid was born September 25, 1889, the son of Henry Walter Reid and Christina Chisholm Logan,

At the time of the 1891, 1901 and 1911 censuses the family lived in Parry Sound and was specifically identified as living on Bay Street in 1911.  Thomas appears to have been working in a hardware store.  

Thomas married Ethel Getrude McFarlane in Parry Sound on August 28, 1915. Thomas signed his Attestation papers on August 31, 1915 in Toronto. In his papers he identified that he was   a Salesman, living in Parry Sound and that he had previous Militia experience with the 48th Highlanders (5 months). He identified his next of kin as his wife Ethel.

In his Officer’s Declaration Paper signed July 14, 1916 in Sunridge, it was identified that Thomas Logan Reid’s next of kin was his wife Ethel living in Sprucedale. 

It further states that he had spent 6 months with the 48th Highlanders and 4 months with the 92nd O..S. An.

It also identified that he had enlisted in the 162nd, overwritten with the 23rd.

In his Certificate of Service, Thomas is identified as having been appointed to Commissioned Rank (Lieutenant) in the 162nd on July 14, 1916.

He is identified as having served with the 162nd, General List and 1st Battalion in England and France. He was ‘Struck Off Strength’ on October 23, 1918 as being surplus to requirements (dated September 12, 1919).

Thomas arrived in England on November 11, 1916. He was transferred from the 162nd to the General List and in January transferred to the 4th Reserve Battalion.

In May 1917 he transferred to the 1st Battalion in Fran

For part of 1917 Thomas attended the 1st Army School of Instruction, rejoining the 1st Battalion later in the year.

In January 1918 he was attached to the 1st Brigade, T.M.  (Trench Mortar) Battery

In March of 1918 he left for the 101 Battalion.

It is interesting to note that while he was assigned to the TM Battery in early 1918, he had been hospitalized in November 1917 with Neurathemia:

In his Proceedings On Discharge, it is identified that Thomas was going to take out the remainder of his Commission in Active Militia.

Thomas died on August 24, 1951.
